Student and Family Support Services

Hawthorne Family Resource Center (HFRC)
For 16 years, HFRC has offered a wide range of comprehensive services designed to improve student academic success and increase families’ self-sufficiency. The HFRC program model is designed to support families with wrap-around services placed at the school site where it is most convenient and safe. Services include: comprehensive school-based after school academic and enrichment programming, a parent center, mental health services, adult education, a medical clinic, and a new parent education support program for parents of children ages 0-5. HFRC program activities are implemented throughout the school year at no cost to the children and families served, and all services are culturally appropriate, bi-lingual (Spanish-English) and integrated into the daily life on campus. Services are designed to maximize access to academic, enrichment, literacy and social services giving families what they need to thrive and by providing access to a broad range of Fruitvale providers, making the most of combined community resources. Access to the on-site La Clínica de La Raza increases health and well-being and supports school success. Services are available to 685 children attending World Academy and Achieve Academy and their families as well as for parents in the community with children ages 0-5. With a long history in the community and many strong collaborative relationships, HFRC has become an important hub of family and community life in Oakland’s Fruitvale District

Sequoia Healthy Start (SHS)
Sequoia Healthy Start is a collaborative project of EBAC, community members, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), parents, teachers, and administrators that provides educational and family support services at Sequoia Elementary School in Oakland. Currently in its ninth year of operation SHS is considered a model program in the OUSD. Its mission is to increase the academic achievement and social functioning of all students at Sequoia. SHS offers direct student and family support services including: a comprehensive after school program with academic intervention and enrichment activities, mental health counseling and family support; and family workshops and events.

Fremont Healthy Start
Serving Fremont and the surrounding communities since 1992, Fremont Healthy Start’s mission is to improve the lives of Fremont children and families by improving family health and social functioning, providing school support programs, and offering assistance with educational and basic needs to over 2000 families each year. The majority of FHS clients have household incomes near the federal poverty line, are people of color, recent immigrants and non-English speakers. FHS has learned that we can best serve the diverse communities of Fremont by employing a multi?cultural staff who can break down many of the barriers that hard?to?reach populations have. FHS services include: health care services enrollment; translation services; case management and service referrals; and direct services to over 2000 families including families with children in the Fremont Unified School District.
