The New Haven Day Treatment program (which opened its doors in May 2000) is a collaborative project between the New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD), Alameda County Mental Health and the East Bay Agency for Children. New Haven Day serves 10 severely emotionally disturbed adolescents at Barnard White Middle School in Union City. The students receive individual, group, family and art therapy, and support in the therapeutic environment that uses a behavior modification therapeutic approach. New Haven Day is staffed with two mental health counselors, two classroom aides, a special education teacher and a therapist.

New Haven Day is fully integrated with the Bernard White Middle School environment, giving students full access to all academic and social activities. Inclusion enhances New Haven Day students' self-esteem and social skills. Each student is encouraged to participate at his or her own level in mainstream class activities. The goal is to add academic mainstreaming activities as students improve in their abilities. Each student's academic needs are met through individual assignments provided by the teacher with input from the therapeutic staff. Our success comes from strong teamwork among staff, the collaboration between NHUSD, East Bay Agency for Children and Barnard White staff, and the strength and creativity of the students and their families.

Supporters in our community also make a tremendous difference to New Haven Day Treatment, with donations of services and expertise. During the summer of 2004, the program has benefited from the generosity of Tri-City Physical Therapy, who have worked with NHDT students at significantly reduced prices.
