Sequoia Healthy Start (SHS), now in its seventh year of operation, serves families and students attending Sequoia Elementary School in Oakland. The SHS provides direct family and student support services to improve student academic success and family stability. We are guided by the following five goals to accomplish its mission:

• To increase academic achievement and success of Sequoia students;
• To increase family well being;
• Make high quality, affordable programs emphasizing the arts available before and after school;
• Increase the Sequoia Elementary's capacity to meet students' social and emotional needs with, for example, case management and mental health services;
• Facilitate better communication between school staff, teachers, and families of several different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Based on income, more than half of the students in Sequoia Elementary are considered educationally disadvantaged and one quarter of the students struggle with limited English skills. Within the larger community, a third of all families are single parent homes; nearly two thirds of the community's African-American families and nearly a half of the Latino families are headed by one parent. On the average, a full third of the students are scoring in the lowest 25% in reading, language and math combined.
