Public Notice of Intent to Apply for 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant.

The mission of the Hawthorne Family Resource Center (HFRC) is to support healthy, self-sufficient youth and families; support student success; and develop parent leadership. The HFRC minimizes social, health care and economic barriers to student success and family stability by providing comprehensive student and family support services for families of East Oakland Community Charter, Hawthorne Elementary School and the greater Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland, CA.

HFRC serves nearly one thousand children, parents and adult community members in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood. Fruitvale is a vital and resourceful community, and HFRC has a long history of collaborative work with our community members, community-based organizations and local merchants and businesses. This history has guided us in forming partnerships with over thirty public and private organizations to promote family self-sufficiency and children's education.

HFRC promotes student success and family stability through the following program components:

  • Family Support Team social workers provide mental health counseling to over one hundred students who demonstrate behavioral and/or learning problems.
  • In conjunction with La Clínica de la Raza, HFRC operates an on-site medical and dental clinic. The clinic provides physical exams and vaccinations necessary for school enrollment and is the primary care facility for many of the newly immigrated families in the area.
  • The Eagle's Nest After-School Program offers over three hundred students in the program academic support and ways to develop their talents. Students can participate in visual arts, basketball, ceramics, choir, Music of Zimbabwe, Chess Club, Computer Club, Capoeira, Cambodian language and culture, Philippine language and culture, Ecology Club, Sports 4 Kids, tennis, Girl Scouts and Brownies, Tae Kwon Do, and/or Ballet Folklorico. An academic component is provided before each activity: Acceleration Program (AP) and/or English Language Development (ELD).
  • Families Together is the adult education component of HFRC's programming. Families Together provides beginning and intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, Spanish literacy, GED, nutrition and computer classes. Participants improve their literacy skills, develop leadership, advocacy and computer skills and through the ESL and GED classes increase employability, advance their own education and personal growth. One hundred fifty adults are enrolled in Families Together's day and evening classes. Childcare is provided to families for all classes.
  • The Hawthorne Parent Center, staffed by current and former Hawthorne parents, is open five mornings and two evenings a week. Parent Center activities center on three areas: basic family needs, parent support for student literacy, and parent voice in the school community.
