Mam Interpreter

Open Position: Mam Interpreter-First 5, Hawthorne Family Resource Center
East Bay Agency for Children (EBAC) is dedicated to the health and educational well-being of children and families through specialized therapeutic, educational and peer support services.
With a staff of 150 and 200 volunteers, we serve 19,000 children, youth and families via 13 primarily school based programs throughout Alameda County
We are currently seeking a customer Mam Interpreter.

Title: Mam Interpreter
Accountability: Lead Teacher

A. FUNCTIONS
The Hawthorne Family Resource Center, a program of East Bay Agency for Children (EBAC), operates educational and family support programs at World and Achieve Academies. EBAC is seeking a Mam Interpreter for its newest program funded through First 5 Alameda County: Little Steps to College. This program prepares preschool-age children and their families for Kindergarten and school success. Outreach will particularly be targeted towards Mam (indigenous Guatemalan) and Latino families.

The Mam Interpreter shall provide classroom interpretation services for Mam participants. The Interpreter will also assist in the effective implementation of program with: family and child literacy activities, provision of one-on-one consultations and screenings, outreach, and assisting with evaluation. They will also serve as a resource person for staff to assure cultural competency through trainings.

Four days per week (Monday-Thursday), the Interpreter will work with up to 12 parent-child pairs, along with the Lead Teacher and an Assistant Teacher, from 8:30-12:30 a.m. There will be one hour of preparation time daily and weekly staff meetings with the team.

Please note that this is a 26 week position in 2011-2012; 39 weeks in 2012-2013. In 2011-2012, the first session begins in January and ends in March. The second session begins in April and end in June. Each session is 12 weeks.

B. QUALIFICATIONS
• At least one year experience as an Interpreter working with children and families in an early childhood setting or non-profit performing similar work with the Mam community
• Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team in a diverse environment
• Ability to ensure confidentiality
• Fluently bilingual Mam/Spanish required, and English desired.

C. RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide classroom interpreter services for Mam participants.
• Assist with program implementation
• Serve as a resource person for staff to assure cultural competency
• Provide Mam cultural competency trainings to staff and school day teachers
• Assist with Mam community outreach
• Other duties as assigned.

D. HOURS AND DAYS

Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
