Child Watch Issue 3

60 Years Young

It seems incredible, but it has been 60 years since the East Bay Agency for Children (EBAC) was started by a group of concerned parents who realized there was little help available for children with emotional, socio-economic and educational issues. While helping their own children, the parents CAP Teamrealized similar problems were being experienced by many other families. Today EBAC helps over 19,000 children and families a year. Now, as then, we believe if we build strong children, there will be fewer adults to mend. EBAC offers 13 programs including a wide range of school and community services and specialized therapeutic and educational services.

As a non-profit organization we work hard to raise funds to continue our vital work, and during our 60th anniversary year we have planned a series of exciting events:

• EBAC Benefit at Wood Tavern – March 25, 2012 (Rockridge, Oakland)
Spend an evening with us at the Wood Tavern, a contemporary, rustic neighborhood restaurant.

• Walk to Remember – May 12, 2012 (Lake Merritt, Oakland)
Join us for the 3rd Annual Walk to Remember in support of EBAC’s Circle of Care grief and illness support services. To find out more >

• EBAC’s 60th Anniversary Party – May 19, 2012 (Uptown Body and Fender, Oakland)
Join us to celebrate 60 years of building brighter futures and stronger communities.

Looking forward, we see a great need to expand our Therapeutic Nursery School program to meet the growing demand for early intervention services for young children suffering the effects of trauma, neglect and abuse; provide additional school-based health centers, and expand our case management and counseling services for vulnerable teens in East and West Oakland.

“It is an honor and a privilege to work for an organization like the East Bay Agency for Children,” said Steve Eckert, Executive Director, EBAC. “I start every day energized knowing we make a difference. It’s not about the numbers for us. It’s about the lives we change.”

"EBAC provides a safety net for the students who are most at risk of failure, catching kids who typically fall through the cracks. EBAC is very good at addressing whatever is distressing them and looking at how those stressors affect their ability to succeed in school." Barbara McClung
