Our Own Community Hero

EBAC is delighted to announce that Gloria Vargas, Afterschool Coordinator at EBAC’s Hawthorne Family Resource Center in Oakland, is one of only 12 nationwide winners of the Safeco® Insurance Community Hero Award. Nominated by Sabine de Lambert-Liopé at Walsh Carter & Associates, Gloria was awarded $5,000 toward her chosen charity.

Gloria has worked at the Center for 10 years and often gives up Friday and Saturday nights to assist the families and children. Gloria lives in the Fruitvale District and is especially invested in the community. She is a community leader who seeks policy change and works with others in the community to create better solutions. She is an advocate of higher education who believes every student – no matter his or her financial situation – should be able to go to college.

EBAC’s Hawthorne Family Resource Center provides enrichment and support programs for over 1,000 students and their families per year at World Academy and Achieve Academy (formerly Hawthorne Elementary School) and is an important hub of family and community life.
